What to do in a Hit-and-Run

September 28, 2017

A car accident is a traumatic and stressful experience. Accidents are even worse if the driver who hit you flees the scene. Hit and run accidents are not necessarily common; however, 11% of accidents reported one of the vehicles involved will flee the scene. With adrenaline and emotions pumping, you must remain calm and follow these steps.

  1. Obtain license plate number - Obtaining a license plate number may be difficult following a hit and run due to the whirlwind of chaos. If you are able to get the driver’s license plate number, authorities will track down the owner of the vehicle that has fled the scene.

  2. Identify the make and model of the vehicle - Though it does not narrow the search for the driver who fled quite like the license plate number, identifying the make and model of the vehicle can still help police find the suspect or vehicle owner.

  3. Gathering witness information – Having eye-witness accounts help authorities track down the suspect who fled the scene.

  4. Time & Location of the Accident – Do not leave the scene to chase the other party involved. Stay at the scene and immediately call the police. Based off your time of call, police will be able to determine the time of the accident.

  5. Pictures & Damage – In any accident, taking pictures of the damage to your vehicle after calling the police is a great place to start your claim.

Know your policy

When purchasing car insurance, make sure your insurance policy covers you with adequate coverage in a hit-and-run accident. Having high policy limits in personal injury protection, uninsured /underinsured motorist coverage, comprehensive coverage, and collision coverage will protect you if you are injured in a hit-and-run accident.  Being involved in an accident is stressful enough; being involved in a hit-and-run has potential to be even worse. In the event of a hit-and-run, remain calm and follow the listed instructions above for the best outcome.
