Drive Sober this Independence Day

Statistics show that alcohol-related crashes, injuries and mortalities increased during the

evening hours of July 4th, 2018.

  • 193 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes. 40% (78) of those fatalities occurred in alcohol-impaired crashes.

  • 71% of those who died in alcohol-impaired crashes were in a crash involving at least one driver or motorcyclist with a BAC of .15 or higher.

Approximately one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the United States involve drunk drivers.

In 2018 alone, there were over 10,500 people killed in these preventable crashes.

Please follow the guidelines set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - especially this 4th of July weekend:

  1. Plan your safe ride home before you attend a party. Choose a non-drinking friend as a designated driver.

  2. If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take his keys and help him arrange a sober ride home.

  3. If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, a ride-hailing service, or a sober friend.

  4. If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.

  5. Always wear your seat belt — it could save your life if you are involved in an accident.

State Specific Laws:

Delaware law prohibits driving:

  • While under the influence of alcohol or any drug

  • With a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or more, or

  • When the driver’s blood unlawfully contains any amount of illicit or recreational drugs.

“Driving,” as it relates to a DUI, includes the operation or actual physical control over a vehicle. “Actual physical control” does not require a running engine or a moving vehicle to result in a DUI conviction—the driver just needs to have the ability to easily become a danger.

Delaware DUI Penalties vary depending on the degree of intoxication and the number of offenses.
