Protecting Your Ride: The Importance of Higher Insurance Coverage for Motorcyclists

Riding a motorcycle exposes individuals to a higher risk of accidents and injuries compared to other vehicles. In the unfortunate event of a collision, medical expenses can escalate rapidly. Motorcycle insurance provides crucial financial protection by covering medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and other related expenses. Without insurance, the financial burden of these costs may fall entirely on the rider, leading to significant financial strain.

In Delaware, carrying motorcycle insurance is a legal requirement. Riding uninsured not only exposes the rider to personal financial risks but also to legal consequences. Penalties for riding without insurance can include fines, license suspension, and even legal action. By maintaining auto insurance, a motorcyclist ensures compliance with legal regulations, avoiding potential legal complications and associated penalties. However, in the realm of insurance coverage, the belief in having "full coverage" can often be misleading. Many individuals might think they are adequately protected, only to discover they possess the bare minimum state limits, which can fall drastically short in the event of a severe motorcycle accident.

The minimum limits are $25k/$50k for Bodily Injury (BI) in Delaware and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage can even be waived; however, when catastrophic injuries occur in motorcycle accidents, these minimums prove grossly insufficient.

The focus here lies in the significance of investing in higher limits for Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Bodily Injury (BI), and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. It should be noted that Delaware is a “no-fault” state, meaning if you are involved in an accident, regardless of fault, YOUR PIP coverage is responsible for the payment of any medical bills or lost wages as a result of the injury. The minimum requirement for PIP in Delaware is $15,000.00. Opting for the bare minimum often translates to inadequate coverage, leaving individuals financially vulnerable in the case of an accident.

What’s the solution, you ask? Consider allocating a higher portion of the insurance premium toward purchasing higher coverage limits. For motorcycle insurance policies, it's recommended to aim for PIP limits of $100k/$300k and UM/UIM limits of $250k/$500k. You should also decline any PIP deductibles.

Ultimately, the extra expenditure towards enhanced insurance coverage serves as a crucial safeguard, providing significantly better protection in the face of unforeseen and severe accidents. It's not just about having insurance; it’s about ensuring that you are covered, when it matters the most.
